Liberating Church Study

Is God calling you to “go all in” to learn qualities of a deeper love that frees us, yet challenges us to seek justice for ALL God’s children? What does it mean to love our neighbor, seek justice, love mercy, and walk with God? Micah 6:8

You are invited to discover how the slave churches of the Pre-Civil War days can give us wisdom that will enrich our own church and Sioux Falls community.

Come for an introduction to the study on May 21st at 6-7 p.m. to learn what we will be studying. We will begin the study by learning the eight marks of a liberating church on May 28th at 6 pm.

Study the eight Marks of a loving and Liberating Church:

  1. Ubunto, a deep mutual care and welcome rooted in our interconnectedness. “I am well, if you are well”. -Sanda Sanganza “A person is a person through other persons” – Bishop Tutu

  2. Stay Awake, to the grief that slavery never ended, by giving attention to all who cry out for hope.

  3. North Star, Seek a North Star that guides us out of an unjust world to a better world where Justice and Peace are found.

  4. All God’s Children Got Shoes, because everyone has gifts and abilities regardless of race, creed, human hierarchies, or sexual identity.

  5. Steal Away, Learn to Steal Away from empires of power to discover a deeper spirituality to follow the Jesus that loved everyone.

  6. Sankofa, To take the wisdom of our ancestors with us as a foundation for a new future.

  7. Joy Unspeakable, causes us to practice freedom and sing joyous deliverance even in captivity.

  8. Talking Book, We do not all follow the same Jesus. Do we follow the Jesus who brought good news to the poor, proclaimed freedom for prisoners, recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to seek and save the lost, or the Jesus of nationalism, power, and wealth?
