Sermon Title: Living the Golden Rule

Text: Luke 6:31-36 (NRSVUE)

Focus: We’ve all heard “the golden rule” whether it was a parent remarking on how we were treating a sibling, or a coach reminding her players of the need for teamwork– the golden rule has been the baseline of human decency for years. Our allegiance belongs to Jesus and our commitment to being good neighbors no matter what’s going on around us: LIVING THE GOLDEN RULE.

Sermon Title: The Kindness Challenge

Text: Luke 10:25-37 (NRSVUE)

Focus: The story of the good Samaritan is widely known but quite rarely practiced. And while it's easy to get on our kids or grandkids for not being nice to their siblings it’s our turn as adults to set the pace.  Kindness is more than an idea, however, it’s faith in action, challenging ourselves to demonstrate kindness, particularly amongst folks outside our normal circles of comfort. What might it look like to express kindness in all our human interactions? Let’s take the KINDNESS CHALLENGE.

Text: Ephesians 4:1-6 (NRSVUE)

Key Word: Humility

Focus: The root of the word “human” is the same as the word “humility.” It all means literally “on the ground.” From dust we came, and to dust we shall return. When we hear each other’s fears, anxieties, and pain, we can return to the ground of hope… that we are all experiencing the pains of being human. This week we remember to look first at our neighbor as a person, not a position. Beginning conversations this way may help us to stay human and “on the ground” with one another rather than needing to come out “on top.” LISTEN MORE; SPEAK LESS.

Sermon Title: Bridges of Respect

Text: Colossians 3:12-17 (NRSVUE)

Key Word: Respect

Focus: Humans are fairly competitive as a species – we want to win, and we want to be right – but sometimes in our quest to defeat those around us we lose out on the relationships we need the most. Paul invites us to engage in conversation in an entirely different way –with kindness, humility, meekness and patience; To hold firmly to our values while making room for the thoughts, beliefs and opinions of others: RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE.

Sermon Title: Do Love

Text: John 13:1-17 (NRSVUE)

Focus: Love. It’s more than a feeling, more than the words we say. Love is a verb and Jesus demonstrates to us an upside-down, act of hospitable service when he washes his disciples’ feet.  Perhaps it's time that we engage in some modern-day foot washing –serving as part of a hospitality team, faithfully praying for our enemies, or simply reaching out to that crankiest neighbor – all signs that no matter what happens we are committed to DO LOVE.

Sermon Title: Make Room for Peace

Text: John 20:19-23 (NRSVUE)

Focus: We may not all define “good news” in the same way, but we do know where to find the Very Good News. In John 20:19–23, the Gospel writer reveals Jesus’ first response to his fearful disciples after the crucifixion. His words offer the kind of Good News they, and we, need most: a message of peace that invites us to receive it and MAKE ROOM FOR PEACE in our lives.

Summary: What would happen if we took Jesus’ words seriously… “Do to others as you would have them do to you”? In a world that often encourages self-interest, Jesus calls us to something radical: compassion, kindness, integrity, and love that puts others first. This series challenges us to live out the Golden Rule in our families, friendships, workplaces, and communities. We’ll explore what it means to treat people with the same grace, patience, and dignity we hope to receive and how living this way transforms not only the world around us, but our hearts as well.
