Serve Nightwatch

We are now serving once a month at the Hayward Elementary School parking lot.  Along with other organizations we serve every Monday evening dinner from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.  90% of the meals are served to children in the neighborhood as their parents are working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

The Banquet meal ministry was founded in 1985 starting with just one meal per week. They now serve 13 meals per week at two locations. The Banquet is a volunteer-based ministry, which means the meals are paid for, prepared by, and served by volunteer groups who come from Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

In 2017 The Banquet served 196,000 meals, and at least 25,000 of those meals were served to children under 12. We go through approximately 15,000 gallons of milk each year.

We are seniors but young at heart.  We enjoy sharing stories, antidotes, wisdom, and fellowship!

Signature Mission Event

"Kidstop's One Stop School Shop" 

We could use about 10-12 volunteers for this event -- (2-4 for washing feet, 4 to guide a child through the process, and 2-4 to make the sack lunches)

For $5 - children will get lunch and be able to pick out an outfit/s, socks, underwear, a backpack with supplies, and get their Samaritans Feet shoes.  We will send out flyers with this information and collect money prior to the event so that we have an idea of how many kids and how many outfits they can pick out, etc. Parental presence will be encouraged, but if parents cannot attend at any time during these hours, we will have volunteers to help navigate each child through the process. Kassidi is going to contact all of the families who attended Kidstop throughout the school year and invite them to this day as well.

Today we will be distribution shoes to all elementary aged children in need. If you know someone who needs a pair of shoes be sure and get them here. Make sure they bring some form of id with them.

Blessing of the Backpacks

Gracious God, we lift to you today, these students.

They stand here ready to receive your blessings and they commit themselves to study and learning in the school year ahead. We ask your blessing on each of them.

Further, we ask your blessing on these backpacks. They will hold the school work of each student and will be carried from home to school and back again. As these students carry these backpacks, may they be reminded of the love and care of this congregation that surrounds them each school day.

We pray as well for the teachers and administrators in our schools. May they also be sustained by your blessing. May they be reminded that this congregation embraces their call to teaching and learning and surrounds them with love and care as well.

We pray in the name of Jesus who we seek to follow day by day. Amen.

Mission Cafe and Bakery

The Mission Café and Bakery is held September each year in the Sioux Falls area.  Together, with other mission events throughout the Dakotas Conference, we were able to raise more than $235,000 to alleviate hunger and poverty locally and globally. The event has a variety of food stations, a bakery, live entertainment, silent auction, craft fair and activities for children!

We are now serving once a month at the Hayward Elementary School parking lot.  Along with other organizations we serve every Monday evening dinner from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.  90% of the meals are served to children in the neighborhood as their parents are working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Serve Banquet West Location

The Banquet meal ministry was founded in 1985 starting with just one meal per week. They now serve 13 meals per week at two locations. The Banquet is a volunteer-based ministry, which means the meals are paid for, prepared by, and served by volunteer groups who come from Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

In 2017 The Banquet served 196,000 meals, and at least 25,000 of those meals were served to children under 12. We go through approximately 15,000 gallons of milk each year.

Please Note:  All volunteers need to register and sign-up for a shift(s) on the Volunteer Matrix System. (PLEASE NOTE:  If you have registered as a volunteer previously in our system, please skip to step 7.) Your Group’s Access Code is: FIRSTUMETHO. 

How to register to volunteer:

  • Visit our website: https://siouxfallshabitat.volunteermatrix.com/ 
  • Click Volunteer
  • Click Construction
  • You will be taken to our volunteer construction calendar which shows the various volunteer shifts that are available.
  • Click New Volunteer Registration located at the top of the calendar.
  • Fill in your information (PLEASE SKIP THE QUESTION “VOLUNTEERING WITH A GROUP”), Please also complete the Orientation information and Skills and Interests survey if possible.
  • Once you have finished the registration, you will be able to go back into the construction calendar and sign up for a shift.  The calendar will show your project address as a “private shift” until the Access Code is entered.
  • Click on the Access Code button which is located at the top of the calendar and enter the code.  You are registering yourself.  Your Access Code is:  FIRSTUMETHO.
  • Click on the shift box you want and click the Sign Up button.
  • At this point, you will be asked to accept the Release and Waiver of Liability and Crew Safety Manual documents as required by Habitat for Humanity (if a new volunteer or if your documents have expired).  A link is provided for those who wish to read the documents.
  • To electronically accept these documents, click the check box and OK (the pink screen will turn to green).  No need to print out the form regardless of what the email you may receive may tell you unless you would like your own copies. 
  • Click the “return to calendar” button to see the date you’ve chosen on the calendar is green.
  • .Click the “log out” button.

Your acceptance date will be tracked and documents are in force for a full year. 

.If the shift fills to capacity, it will either show as full or not be visible on the calendar at all.

Remember, self scheduling shuts down at midnight preceding the event.  If needed, a cancellation notice will be sent out via email to all those who signed up online.

UMW is sponsoring a summer gathering to celebrate this year’s successful mission trips.  Please join us on Wednesday, July 11th at 6:00 pm in the Wesley Roundtable Dining Room for entertainment and presentations by mission trip participants.  Supper will be served at a cost of $5.00 to be collected that night.  We need a meal count in advance, so please contact the church office by July 9th and let them know you will be attending.

Senior Adults, Growing, Exploring, Serving

S.A.G.E.S. meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Round Table Dining room.  We eat a great meal for $5 (first time guests are free), we sing, study about a hymn of the month, share announcements, and joys, have interesting and informative programs, share fellowship and finish up around 1:00 pm.

We are seniors but young at heart.  We enjoy sharing stories, antidotes, wisdom, and fellowship!

July Signature Mission event

"Seats and Feets"

Throughout the summer months, different drives will be held to collect necessities for Kidstop children as they begin a new school year this fall.

Thank you for your May and June donations! We'll continue to take gently used or new elementary aged clothing and backpacks throughout the summer.

July kicks off "Seats and Feets" in which elementary aged size socks and underwear will be collected.  Put donations in teh box next to the Information Center.

All drive donations willb e given to Kidstop kids at a back to school event in August.

There will be an official meeting for BOTH the Puerto Rico Mission Trip and the Fargo Mission Trip on Wednesday June 6th at 6:30. During this meeting we will be talking about packing lists, expectations, and any last minute boring adult paperwork stuff. The meeting will start with stuff needed for the Fargo Mission Trip, then move on to stuff needed for both, and finally we will talk about Puerto Rico.  Any questions email Curtis Mittendorf
