MARCH MISSION OF THE MONTH: Community Outreach Center.  The Mission of the Month for March is The Community Outreach Center, a small ecumenical non-profit that has existed in Sioux Falls for 30 years.  It serves 4000 people per year with three main services:  financial assistance for rent and utilities, information and referral to other social service agencies, and it serves a s clearinghouse for social service agencies.  The ministry also connects the faith community to those in need by offering opportunities for mentor families.

FUMC has a team of eight volunteer's in the Community Outreach program called Genesis.  The team has helped a family achieve safe housing.  The mentors also provide the family with tools for financial literacy and good parenting skills.

FUMC thanks those volunteering with the Community Outreach Center.  Pastor Dick Boyd and Dave Eiesland who serve on the Board of Directors.  Members of the Genesis Team are:  Sonja Gourley, chair; David Mah, Mary Kieff, Eric Uecker, Karen Koob, Steve Quincey and Pastor Boyd.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER:  Please join us on Wednesday, March 10th for Mexican Hot dish, Coleslaw, Garlic Bread, Dessert, Coffee, Milk and Water.  We will serve in the Round Table dining Room from 5:00 - 6:15 pm.  There will be a donation to cover the cost of the meal.  We hope to see you there!

FLOOD BUCKET CAMPAIGN:  The Higgins Men's Bible Study group has started the flood bucket campaign this year and has set the goal of twenty buckets.  An order has been placed for the supplies to gain a volume discount.  Each bucket has an approximate value of $50.  If you wish to contribute, checks can be made to the church with the notation "cleaning or flood buckets."  It appears the Dakotas will be in need of these resources this spring.

PAID NURSERY WORKERS NEEDED:  In order to adequately staff the nursery, we are taking applications for paid nursery workers to begin as soon as possible.  The schedule includes Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights and other times the nurseries are open.  Applicants must be at least 18 years old and willing to submit to a background check to apply.  Applications are available in the church office.  Applications should be submitted as soon as possible.  Questions can be directed to Nicole Lebahn at 261-5579 or Mary Jane Richardson at 336-3652.

50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE:  The children of Roger & Carol Krenz invite you to an open house celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 2-4 pm in the Fellowship Hall. They request no gifts.

NEW SUNDAY MORNING CLASS - HOW TO READ THE PSALMS:

This new Lenten study is taught by Rev. Don Veglahn at 9:00 am on Sunday mornings, March 14 and 21 (in the Lewis Friendship Room).  The emphasis will be on personal and devotional reading of the Psalms, including a deeper understanding of the Psalms as literature expressing human cries to God rather than God's leading and instruction to humans.  These ancient hymns and poetry witness to the faith of Old Testament people over as much as a thousand years, and are central to the worship in which Jesus and his followers were steeped.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET AND GET TO KNOW SOME OF OUR NEIGHBORS?  Are you interested in other cultures? - while being helpful.  We need some helpers with the ESL (English as a Second Language) classes now being held at 1st Church.  No previous experience is needed - only a desire to meet interesting people.  For more information please call Sandy Entenman, 334-3298 or leave your name at the church office.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  If anyone has keys that you have checked out for an activity at the church and have not returned it or you have keys to the church that you are not in need of anymore, please return these to the church office.  This process will help in the cost of having new keys made.  Thank you!

PASSIONATE PANCAKE SATURDAY:  March 27, 9 a.m. - 12 noon featuring Chef Tomonique (Tom Stritecky) serving eggs, pancakes, sausages and orange juice.  The event is being organized by the Finance and Stewardship Committees and is being funded with gifts from members of our congregation given towards purchasing food.  Tickets go on sale March 7 at $6 per ticket - children 5 and under free.  We invite every member of the congregation to help sell tickets and let's make a deal!  Half the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards funding the overall ministries of FUMC and the other half will go towards the program budget of the ticket salesperson's choice...extra funds for your favorite program!  Individual tickets may be purchased with the same option.  Come celebrate as you bid on silent auction items, enjoy fellowship and entertainment, and help support FUMC ministries!

ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE?  Who is the most important person in determining whether a visitor in our church returns and eventually becomes a member?  IT IS YOU.  Whos is the person whose actions determine if a visitor feels welcomed and returns to our church?

IT IS YOU.  Join us Sunday, March 21 from 10-11 am in the RTD for a training opportunity for hosts and hostesses!    HOSPITALITY:  WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE!!

CHILDCARE NURSERY:  We are proud to provide nursery care for infants and children up to age 3 in Rm 312 during the three morning worship services.  This nursery is staffed by paid staff that are trained to care for our infants and toddlers.  Just a reminder, this nursery is designed for infants and children up to age 3; onece a child has turned 3 they can attend church with their families.  The room is not designed for older children.  If you have any questions, feel free to visit with Mary Jane Richardson.

DID YOU KNOW that First United Methodist Church has a wonderful ministry of quilting?  We have many talented, faithful, and hard-working women who meet frequently on Thursday afternoons here, and also use their time at home to make quilts for a variety of people.  Part of our congregational care ministry includes giving a beautiful, handmade baby quilt to infants and their new parents, who are members of this church.  If you have a desire to help fund the purchase of the flannel material or other supplies used for the baby blankets, please talk to Carolyn, or designate your check or cash with a note for "baby quilt supplies."  Your gift will be appreciated by those who tirelessly share their creative sewing talents, AND by the infants who are covered or wrapped with a welcoming gift from this church famly.

FIRST CHURCH MEMBERS REALLY DO LIKE M & M'S!!  Thank you to everyone who quickly accepted a tube of mini M & M's for collecting quarters for our summer Apostle Habitat for Humanity Build.  Some have already been returned.  If you want to let us know who you are for giving purposes to the church, please be sure to write your name on the tube before handing it in.  You have until Easter to do so.  You may also give them to Jeri in the main church office.  Other members who wish to donate to our Habitat Apostle Build may do so by giving your money or check to Jeri in an envelope marked Habitat.  Hmmmm....weren't they good?  Again, a big thank you to Lewis drug Stores for donating 310 Mini M&M's.

SOCK SUNDAY - MARCH 21:  Do you know that there are people in Sioux Falls who do not even have an extra pair of socks?  Each week nurses provide free foot-care at the SIGH clinic to the underserved and homeless population.  After each treatment, clients get free brand new socks.  White or colored socks are needed in women's regular and large sizes, women's diabetic socks and men's x-large & xx-large socks.  Drop off box is located in the church office.

TREE OF LIFE MISSION TRIP - MAY 23-29TH: COST Parents - $200, students - $200, Adults - $365.  Spend a week serving together with Asbury UMC on this intercultural Mission trip.  Sponsored by 1st UMC Youth and Young Adult Ministries.  Call today!  Contact the Johnsens.

PRAYER PARTNERS NEEDED:  We are looking for some prayer partners to pray for Camp E.D.G.E. task force as they plan for Vacation Bible School, for members as they volunteer to work with VBS, our children who will be attending and to do a prayer walk around the sites for VBS this summer before Camp E.D.G.E. begins.  If you are interested in being a VBS prayer partner, please sign up in hte office or contact Mary Jane at 336-3652.  Thank you for your assistance with this part of VBS.

A BIG THANK YOU for the donations of money and items for the UMCOR health kits since the recent Haiti earthquake in January.  The people of our First United Methodist Church helped contribute 162 health kits that were delivered to our pick-up point at Asbury UMC, where they were loaded for a delivery to the UMCOR Sager Brown depot in Baldwin, LA.  From Sager Brown, they will be distributed where the next requested need is.

YOUNG FAMILIES:  Do you have nice, gently used infant/children's used clothing (up to size 5) or other baby/toddler items (such as bassinettes, baby swings, etc)?  Bright Start is a home-based nursing program that provides many services to women, infants, and small children in the Sioux Falls area.  They are having a "Mom Swap" the end of March and would appreciate any donated items by march 24.  Or, you may be interested in the Bright Start program.  Please contact Susan Kroger with the Bright Start office at 274-0233 for further information.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME:  Don't forget Daylight Savings Time starts next Sunday, March 14th.  Turn your clocks ahead an hour before bedtime on Saturday night!

THIS WEEK IN FAITHLINK: Essentials of Christian Faith.  A recent study reports that many people mix elements of multiple faiths.  What are the essentials of Christian faith and the unique emphasis of The United Methoidst Church?  In our diverse religious climate, how do United Methodists reclaim and practice the essentials of our faith?

RENEWAL WORSHIP: Join us March 14 at 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall for passionate prayer and powerful worship!

LENTEN DEVOTIONALS are available at the Welcome Center or can be found online.

HELP NEEDED!:  Are you seeking that special ministry you would like to be involved at 1st UMC?  Have we got a deal for you!  We are in need of screen runners and sound operators at all 3 of our worship services on Sunday mornings.  There will be training for both ministries.  You would not have to do this every week (unless you want to!).  Please contact Laurie Kidd for the screens and Rod Mader for the sound booth.  Pray about this and let us know how we can fulfill your passion to praise God through these ministries.

GROCERY CARDS:  You may now buy Hy-Vee and Sunshine cards in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings.  These cards may be used the same as money in these stores.  All proceeds from these sales will be used for UMW Mission projects locally and worldwide.

DO YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK TO WORSHIP?  Do you have a neighbor, friend, co-worker that you would like to invite to worship or activities here at First Church?  If so, please pick up a church brochure located at the literature racks by the Welcome Center to give out to anyone who may be interested.

PLEASE contact the church office if you or a loved one is a patient in one of the hospitals.  We don't want to miss you!

DID YOU KNOW????  Did you know that you can have the monthly Media sent to you via e-mail?  Please provide us with your name and e-mail address and we will add you to our e-mail list.  As postage rates and paper costs are on the rise, you can help the church save money and be one of the first to receive your Monthly Media.  Please let the church office know if you would like to take advantage of this!!

INGATHERING:  Cool evenings-chilly fall days coming soon make it a great time to purchase a cozy fleece blanket in a pillow!  We will also have them without the pillow soon.  They bear the United Methodist logo and may be found at the Welcome Center on Sundays or ordered if our stock is depleted.  The cost is $30.00 and the profit goes to Ingathering ventures.  These are also great gifts for the people going back to school.  Check it out!
