After graduation from school, Laura attended a Christian college where she majored in Biblical Studies and education. She always had a passion for service and, upon graduation from college, became a missionary with World Impact, serving the urban poor in inner city Los Angeles. She also serves as an advisor to Student Council, coordinated the summer staff program, and is serving as administrator of the school.
World Impact is a Christian missions organization dedicated to ministering God's love in the inner cities of America. Its purpose is to honor and glorify God and delight in Him in the inner cities by knwoing God by the gospel of Jesus christ through evangelism, follow-up, discipleship and indegenous church-planting. It empowers urban disciples; training leadership for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.
World Impact's missionaries live in the communities where they minister and present Christ to the unchurched through Bible clubs, Bible studies and worship services.
INGATHERING COMMITTEE: Thanks all who came to enjoy the pulled pork sandwich evening meal with ice cream and cookies/cakes/bars. We were able to clear almost $1,000 profit for World Hunger thanks to the all-church help in cooking, baking, preparation, serving, waiting tables and clean up. The combined effort of the Men's breakfast group, UMW, the Missions Committee, extra help from others, and the ingathering Committee made this one of the most successful ice cream social events ever! Thank you for your commitment ot this ministry.

DID YOU KNOW that First United Methodist Church has a wonderful ministry of quilting? We have many talented, faithful, and hard-working women who meet frequently on Thursday afternoons here, and also use their time at home to make quilts for a variety of people. Part of our congregational care ministry includes giving a beautiful, handmade baby quilt to infants and their new parents, who are members of this church. If you have a desire to help fund the purchase of the flannel material or other supplies used for the baby blankets, please talk to Carolyn, or designate your check or cash with a note for "baby quilt supplies." Your gift will be appreciated by those who tirelessly share their creative sewing talents, AND by the infants who are covered or wrapped with a welcoming gift from this church famly.
GROCERY CARDS: You may now buy Hy-Vee and Sunshine cards in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings. These cards may be used the same as money in these stores. All proceeds from these sales will be used for UMW Mission projects locally and worldwide.
DO YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK TO WORSHIP? Do you have a neighbor, friend, co-worker that you would like to invite to worship or activities here at First Church? If so, please pick up a church brochure located at the literature racks by the Welcome Center to give out to anyone who may be interested.
PLEASE contact the church office if you or a loved one is a patient in one of the hospitals. We don't want to miss you!
DID YOU KNOW???? Did you know that you can have the monthly Media sent to you via e-mail? Please provide us with your name and e-mail address and we will add you to our e-mail list. As postage rates and paper costs are on the rise, you can help the church save money and be one of the first to receive your Monthly Media. Please let the church office know if you would like to take advantage of this!!
STEWARDSHIP “QUICK FACTS”
First United Methodist Church Supports Local Missions
Sunday Night Canteen is a Sunday night meal project supported by the United Methodist Churches in the area in cooperation with the Salvation Army. Our church groups sign up to prepare food (usually a sack lunch of a sandwich, fruit, and cookie) and serve over 200 sack meals using the Salvation Army bus as the distribution vehicle, and our west parking lot and a downtown location as distribution centers. FUMC takes its turn once a month. The program is funded by mission of the month funds but there are times families/individuals purchase and prepare the food as their gift of providing food for the hungry. The cost is from $250 to $300 each Sunday meaning for our twelve Sundays, over $3,000 is contributed to this ministry.
Community Outreach and the Genesis Program – People needing help are generally referred to Sioux Falls Community Outreach, the agency that keeps records on those receiving assistance. They are trained to better determine the need, the urgency, and the amount of assistance to those needing help. Our Pastor Dick Boyd serves on the Community Outreach Board. Our gift this year was $2,300. As a part of the Community Outreach the Genesis Program concentrates on getting families back on their feet. $1,000 was given to this program last year.
Children’s Inn – A place of refuge for families living in fear or threatening circumstances. The UMW has a container in the church office for gifts and the Missions Committee has chosen it as a mission of the month. Our gift was $600 last year.
Back Pack Program – Children are given backpacks filled with food for their families for the weekend. The children return the backpacks the beginning of the week and the next weekend take home another supply of food. Our United Methodist Churches Concert supported this mission this year in the amount of $500. The FUMC choir sent $800 from its pancake fundraiser and several fellowship groups sent another $200 for a total gift of $1,500.
Food Pantry – The first Sunday of every month (Communion Sunday) has been designated as Food Pantry Sunday. An oatmeal box is used to hold this monthly offering. Last year over $6,500 was given to this mission of feeding the hungry in our community.
United Day Care – Housed in our building without having to pay rent, repair or upkeep costs, utilities, or snow removal. UDC is a United Way Agency. In addition to the “in house” gifts listed above, UDC receives $4,200 in budget support from FUMC.
The Compass Center – Last year received over $1,000 for their ministry to women living in abusive situations.
Minister’s Discretionary Fund – When persons come to the office requesting help they are usually referred to Community Outreach, however, there are times of emergencies the ministers have the freedom to supply help using these funds. The UMW has been a constant supporter of this fund. Last year $750 was used for this ministry.
Habitat for Humanity – This year FUMC has joined other churches in an effort to raise $5,000 for a Habitat build. We are sending close to $5,200 for that project which includes $1,000 given by the choir from the pancake supper proceeds. There will also be parishioners helping with the hands-on building.
Kidstop Program – Free after school and summer program for neighborhood children. Children enjoy both relaxed and structured activities, a safe place to come after school, and tutoring help with school work. This program is supported by United Way. Program costs $43,500. Our share of support is $6,000.
The Missions Committee also gifted the Furniture Mission and Firehouse Underground ministries with $100 each and purchased $170 in turkey dinner tickets that were given to families and friends in our neighborhood.
